Unusal FANCY JAR with 1898 GLASS TOPPER lid and LUGS for WIRE handle MAGENTA
A 5 1/4 tall pint size deep SUN COLORED AMETHYST (SCA) antique’product’ jar. This is NOT a reproduction but a GENUINE CENTURY plus OLD antique jar. And it comes with the antique purple glass handled topper lid to top i t off with that was found with it. Ote too that it has two glass’lugs’ on each side near the top that look like they either 1h eld a swinging wire handle attached to them, or 2held a wire clamp that held the lid down. W hat a beautiful example of an antique’product’ jar, especially with rays of sunlight streaming through i. Lid of jar embossed. OCT 18 th 1898. Condition : This jar is in super NICE CLEAN condition. It has some light wear and/or haze, about what you’d expect to find on a jar that has been around for over a century. It also has a pot stone on the shoulder with a few tiny fissures radiating out of it. A “pot stone” is a small piece of debris like a grain of sand or tiny stone that was in the glass when the bottle was blown into the mold. As a result, once the jar was blown and was cooling down and hardening, the’stone’ cooled at a differnt pace then the rest of the glass and that created a some tiny flashes/fissures, tiny cracks, coming out of the stone. Kind of like how hot and cold expands and contracts? This resulted in the tiny cracks and I mean’tiny’! Radiating out of the pot stone. Otherwise this jar has NO chips, cracks, dings, damage, etc. Age : An ABM mold-blown smooth lip jar, ca. What an ornate looking antique’product’ jar! Jars like this that are not fruit jars are just called’product’ jars as they usually came packed with some type of product; ie. Jam, honey, relish, condiments, etc. The lid has a tiny V shaped slit in it for a small handle of a spoon to project out while still keeping the contents sealed. So that’s our story and we’re sticking to it. The color is an ABSOLUTELY STUNNING DEEP purple color! We’ve all heard about old glass turning purple in the sunlight… This beautiful purple amethyst color is the result of this bottle being made with manganese-glass. Manganese is a mineral, a rock, that was mined, crushed, and pulverized into a powder, then added to vats of liquid glass, and acted as a decolorizing agent to turn the natural aqua-tinted glass into a pure crystal clear colorless glass. But when exposed to the ultraviolet rays of the sun or other sources of UV rays, it triggers a chemical reaction and the manganese oxidizes and turns a wonderful amethyst color. This bottle was run through an industrial food sterilizer, a safe and permanent process which does the same thing as exposure to natural sunlight, except much faster. It is not irradiated, like the many other purple bottles you see that are kind of a pale, sick, washed-out purple color. This is just the richest and truest purple color that youve ever seen! Though some will suggest that this lavender color has been artificially produced or altered, the only thing that is artificial or altered is the time it took to turn purple. Whether a glass item has turned purple by the sun, by UV rays in a box, or by a sterilization process, they all turn the same purple color as it is all the same chemical reaction taking place. With few exceptions, only clear glass from before 1914 will turn sun-colored-amethyst so as you see, with the 1905 date, it was getting near the cutoff date for purple glass, which is why most of these you see are not old enough to turn purple. Not not only does this deep purple/amethyst color make this a great looking antique bottle, but it also authenticates it as being truly antique! Again, it has two glass’lugs’ on each side near the top that look like they either 1h eld a swinging wire handle attached to them, or 2held a wire clamp that held the lid down.
