A beautiful, rare, and highly collectible American Brilliant Period SIGNED clear cut/etched glass crystal short round lidded Cookie Jar – or it can hold whatever you wish! . The dish was hand-crafted by T. Hawkes, a world-famous glass company of Corning, New York circa early 1900s. The 8-inch diameter lidded jar weighs 4-lbs and stands about 3-inches tall – plus an additional inch with its sumptuous floral-engraved handle. The dish is cut in the art deco Millicent pattern, with 4 etched floral panels set between alternating cut stripes on its decorative set-on lid. Each panel features a different design overflowing with flowers and leaves – including a cornucopia, an urn, a basket, and a branch. The dish is hallmarked near the edge of its base with the etched cloverleaf symbol of the Hawkes company above the HAWKES name. Hawkes & Company glass cutting shop in 1890. On the heels of success the year before when Hawkes famously won acclaim and Grand Prize at the Universal Exposition in Paris. European taste for sparkling cut glass at this time was emulated in the United States in what was called the American Brilliant Cut Glass Period. Over 1,000 cutting shops were founded to meet the demand and T. Hawkes & Company flourished. The company was in operation for 82 years. Condition: This antique lidded crystal’jar’ is in very good condition with a couple tiny air bubbles, some light scratches and minor shelf wear on its base, and no cracks or damage other than two 1/4-inch rough spots and one 1/4 chip along the bottom rim of the lid.
