This is a RARE, perfect and ALL ORIGINAL Mount Washington biscuit barrel/cookie jar made of hand blown and hand enamelled Crown Milano or Albertine glass. It has its original silver plated handle, frame and lid. The design on the lid matches the hand painted design of a plum or apple tree in bloom on the glass jar. It is masterfully hand enamelled/painted on both sides. The paintings are raised, are outlined with gold and are in perfect condition. The double rope handle with a center ball separation and a shell design as the attachment to the simple classic collar is a perfect enhancement to the double dome lid with a rope design on the knop. This lid is deeply etched and chased with a two flower blossom design which matches the design of the flowers painted on the glass body. There is no damage, nor repairs on the collar nor the lid. Bright and clean with only very minor loss of silver due to age and use an has not been replated. The body is a Mount Washington Crown Milano or Albertine glass: an opaque satin glass shading from a soft pink at the top to a pale cream at the base. It is decorated on both sides with a classic flowering tree bearing pink and blue blossoms and pale green foliage. The blossoms have raised stamens and pistles; and raised gold/ gilt outlines. The leaves and the tree and branches all have raised gold/gilt outlines. There is further decoration of a line of raised gilded quarter circles separated by raised dots encircling the jar at the shoulder and around the based framing the paintings. This type of glass was originally called “Albertine” and was patented in the USA in 1893. The name was soon changed to “Crown Milano”. EARLY examples of Albertine were unmarked and early Crown Milano had only paper labels (long since disintegrated). LATER examples were signed “CM” with a crown above and sometimes also with “Mount Washington” or “MW”. Perfect examples of Crown Milano/Albertine glass are scarce and generally found only in museums and private collections. The subtle and controlled coloring of the glass, the masterful design and quality of the raised hand enamelled painting, and its mint condition make this one an outstanding example and of museum quality. CONDITION: The condition is clean and perfect. There are no chips, no cracks, and no wear to the enamelled paintings. It has very minor use/age rubbing to the silver plating. REFERENCES: There are many available references for this type of Art Glass. I have Ray and Lee Grover’s book “Art Glass Nouveau” published in 1967. I owned an antique import/export business for over 30 years and have collected art glass for over 50 years. Also one can research this piece extensively on the internet.
